Pagets disease affects bones causing them to break down faster than normal. The body reacts to this by making bone faster to make up for the abnormal loss. The new bone ends up softer than normal bone, which leads to bones bowing and changing in length causing the sufferer a lot of pain in the bones and joints.
My elderly neighbour has suffered with Pagets disease for many years and has slowly become less and less agile as the pain in his bones and joints have increased. He started to have a lot of problems sleeping because he could not get into a comfortable position in bed and the pain either kept him awake or it woke him up in the middle of the night.
A few months ago a memory foam topper was introduced into their sleeping arrangements. The topper was simply laid on top of their existing firm mattress and a sheet spread on top of that. My neighbour now has nothing but praise for it. He reports that he gets to sleep quickly, he sleeps the whole night through and jokes that he wakes up in exactly the same position he was in when he went to sleep.
